Description

The Language and Reading Companion is a talking book website for learning English as a second language at the college level.

The selected texts deal with a variety of topics, themes, and genres directly related to the main disciplines of study at the CEGEP level. The texts span a number of genres, such as the article, essay, narrative history, and short story, and several rhetorical modes, such as exposition, argumentation, and narration.

The texts are divided into four categories: Business, Geography, Humanities and Literature. The five texts in the Business category help students achieve a block B competence. Texts in the Geography category deal with physical geography and human geography by exploring the important relationship between people and place and examining humanity’s impact on the Earth’s environment. The first two texts in the Humanities category help students apply a critical thinking process to worldviews, while the third text in this category focuses on the analytical process of organizing and using knowledge. Finally, the texts selected for the Literature component of the program help students understand the basic structures of short fiction by exposing them to literary elements such as plot, character development, and setting.

By listening and reading at the same time, students can improve both their comprehension and pronunciation. To enrich their vocabulary, they can click on a word they don’t know to bring up its definition. They can also check their comprehension by taking in a quiz that accompanies the text or by completing the corresponding exercises.
